Have you ever wondered, which are the smartest dog breeds in the world?
I did. So, today I am sharing a list of some of the smartest dog breeds.
According to the 1994 book by Stanley Coren, PhD, DSc., FRSC, entitled The Intelligence of Dogs, these are the ten smartest out of 100 dog breeds.
OK, here are the TOP 10 smartest dog breeds:
10. The Australian Cattle Dog.
The Australian Cattle Dog is intelligent, active, and filled with energy. She will not be content to sit with you on the couch in your apartment and watch TV with you for hours on end. Instead she will encourage you: “C’mon, let’s go outside and see what we can do! Let’s run and play, get some good exercise. What kind of work can we do around here?”
Even though they are protective and alert, because they are so intelligent, they get bored easily. They really need something to do and the space to do it.
Australian Cattle Dogs are not into cuddling and being affectionate; however, just like anybody else, they appreciate good treatment, praise and acknowledgement of a “good job.”
They learn well, if they first “get” that their human is serious and consistent about training; otherwise, they have a mind of their own.
9. The Rottweiler.
Did you know the Rottweiler is one of the most popular dogs in the United States, the UK, and Canada? This breed is not only intelligent, it is loyal, self-confident and devoted to its human, among other great qualities.
Once you’ve gained this dog’s trust, you will be able to teach her/him various charming things to do. Rottweilers are very smart.
If you decide to get one of these dogs, early socialization should be primary, because it will help your Rottie become a friendly and more suitable family pet.
8. The Papillon.
Are you looking for a smart, friendly, always happy, and attentive dog?
You will find it right here, in the highly intelligent Continental Toy Spaniel, also known as the Papillon.
This breed is called “papillon” because its distinctive ears resemble a butterfly’s wings. Papillon is the French word for butterfly.
They learn new lessons with ease. Of course, it should be noted that they are a small breed and can be fairly stubborn. They require a bit of encouragement to learn, such as treats. Once you reward them, they’ll learn almost anything!
7. The Labrador Retriever.
The Labrador Retriever has been the No. 1 Most Popular breed in the American Kennel Club for 30 years because this is an intelligent, active, friendly, and peaceful pet. They get along very well with children and desire their person’s attention. And Labs are known as one of the best breeds for first-time owners.
6. The Shetland Sheepdog.
Shetland Sheepdogs are lively and intelligent, and they are always willing to learn new tricks and play with children.
Shelties are devoted to their families, and sometimes they are reserved toward strangers. These dogs often bark at passersby.
5. The Doberman Pinscher.
Doberman Pinschers are intelligent, strong, hardy, agile, and fearless. They are very popular as guard dogs, and they are fairly easy to train. Although they have a reputation for being aggressive, with early socialization, they can become good, cuddly pets.
4. The Golden Retriever.
Friendly, intelligent, reliable, and kind – that’s your Golden Retriever.
They are also among the most popular dog breeds in the world. These dogs are extraordinary pets that will strive to do their best in any task you give them. They are known to be a friendly, polite, and a particularly beautiful breed.
3. The German Shepherd.
Brave, self-confident, and highly intelligent are descriptions that come readily to mind when speaking about the German Shepherd breed, one of the most popular in the world. German Shepherds can quickly learn various acts due to their obedience and ability to focus on the tasks given to them.
2. The Poodle.
Not only do Poodles have a beautiful coat, making them lovely to look at, they also happen to be one of the smartest dog breeds.
They are highly intelligent and able to easily learn various tasks, such as house-training, sitting, staying, etc. The Poodle is a beautiful, obedient, and loyal dog breed that can be a great pet.
In addition to all of that, Poodles come in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.
And the most intelligent dog breed in the world is . . .
1. The Border Collie.
Border Collies are the smartest dogs in the world! They are very energetic and always on the move. Almost any assignment you give them, they can do – although they much prefer the ones that require them to be active.
Did you know about these breeds? I really hope you’ve enjoyed this “discussion” about the smartest dog breeds on the planet.
By the way, if you’re looking for the “smartest dog,” because you believe they’ll be the easiest to train, you might have to give that a little more thought because smart dogs sometimes end up training their owners. Just sayin’ . . .
One More Thing . . .
Many mixed-breed puppies show a high degree of intelligence, and the potential of these babies can sometimes even surpass that of the breeds mentioned above.
Sometimes they seem to be more motivated and energetic, allowing you and the puppy to achieve a great deal of success with some good, quality training time.
