The Breeds
You’re going to need to bring your checkbook, if you’re interested in any of these expensive breeds! This is a continuation of Expensive Dogs (https://wetnosecentral.com/expensive-dogs/).
$1,500 – $4,000
Canadian Eskimo Dog
Even if you don’t have a sled, a check for $1,500–$6,000 will be required for your new Canadian Eskimo Dog.
Cane Corso
The Cane Corso seems like an enigma. On the one hand, this big fierce-looking dog needs firm handling and disciplining (tailandfur.com), but he’s “easy enough” to train. On the other hand, he’s good with children and extremely protective of home. If you’ve got another hand, he’s extremely expensive – between $1,500 and $4,000. (moneyinc.com)
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Moneyinc.com says that for $1,000 to $14,000 you can have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. If you don’t mind “clingy,” she is a small, friendly, intelligent and easily trained breed that will make a good house companion and require a moderate amount of exercise. It is suggested that since she’s loved by Royalty, she’s more expensive to have.
Great Dane
The giant, but gentle, Great Dane is so friendly. Not so much a watchdog – unless you count his imposing appearance. In addition to the cost of about 10 cups of kibble a day, you will also have to come up with around $2,500 to bring home all 140 pounds of this darling. And, just because he’s a big guy, he runs the risk of some health issues.
Irish Wolfhound
The Irish Wolfhound – often described as a “gentle giant” – will require an investment of about $1,800 to $2,000 (moneyinc.com), plus grooming costs of around $65 per visit. Additionally, medical expenses can run in the four-figure range over his lifetime. (Bright Side video)
Landseer
“If you see a dog that fits the Newfoundland profile but has a black and white coloration, you may be looking at the Landseer Newfoundland. Though some organizations consider this dog to be a color variant of the Newfoundland, others recognize it as a completely separate breed.” (https://www.petguide.com) The playful, patient, intelligent Landseer (aka Landseer-Newfoundland) is another giant dog that will cost around $2,000. “A Landseer puppy will sale [sic] for around $2,000.” (tailandfur.com)
Portuguese Water Dog
Some Portuguese Water Dog puppies may chew, so it’s wise to have chew toys on hand. Recognize, too, that PWDs will likely poke their noses on counters and in other banned places. puppyfind.com says you can find Portuguese Water Dog puppies priced from $395 USD to $3,400 USD. (https://www.puppyfind.com/portuguese+water+dog.php)
Saluki
The Saluki is called the Royal Dog of Egypt. (https://moneyinc.com/most-expensive-dog-breeds-in-2019/) As such, he commands a price of around $2,500 (The Dog Digest and MoneyInc.). The Saluki is a very fast and agile athlete. He is calm and quiet with an elegant appearance. As long as you can accept this intelligent animal is not much of a house dog, he will be your companion for 12 to 14 years.
$3,000 – $7,000
Akita
The beautiful Akita originated in feudal Japan. She was introduced to America in 1937 by Helen Keller. She is large, rugged and powerful-looking, yet loyal and affectionate with her owner and family, although not particularly friendly with strangers. She is brave, intelligent and does not back down. Some strains in this breed have gone for $2,500 to $4,500. (The Dog Digest) (https://www.thedogdigest.com/dog-prices/top-10-worlds-most-expensive-dog-breeds-to-own/9/)
Chinese Crested Hairless
The Chinese Crested Hairless has practically no body hair at all – except for its tail. Because they are hairless, they tend to have the same kinds of skin issues as humans (i.e., acne, rashes and sunburn). If this breed is your choice, you will need around $5,000 (tailandfur and moneyinc.com).
Dogo Argentino
It’ll cost you about $3,900 to cuddle with the intelligent, stubborn guardian known as Dogo Argentino (Add to that around $35 per grooming session. The lifespan of a Dogo Argentino is 10 to 14 years.
English Bulldog
The very friendly, slobbering and loveable English Bulldog will not be a watchdog, but a breeder will still require around $4,300 (wealthygorilla.com) before you can call him your own (wealthygorilla.com). In fact, moneyinc.com reports, “The English Bull Dog can cost between $2,500 to $9,000 . . .” (moneyinc.com)
Pharaoh Hound
The Pharaoh Hound has been around since 4000 BC. This $3,000 to $7,000 snuggler hails from Malta, and is known as Malta’s National Dog. When he (or she) is very happy or excited, his nose and ears flush with blood – she blushes. She’s gentle and loving with children. The Dog Digest says some Pharaoh Hound bloodlines can reach upwards of $6,500! Rarely stubborn, MoneyInc says their price ranges from $3,500 to $9,000. (https://moneyinc.com/most-expensive-dog-breeds-in-2019/)
Rottweiler
The Rottweiler used to be a dog that pulled butchers’ carts, then he was a soldier. Now you can find him doing a little guard work when he’s not loving and protecting his family. It’ll cost $4,000 to $6,000 to bring him home. (The Dog Digest and moneyinc.com) Keep in mind that this breed is susceptible to hip and joint issues.
$5,000 – $10,000
Chow Chow
Even though they are not considered highly intelligent, you will STILL need between $3,000 and $9,000 to add a Chow Chow to your family. Althoough considered a dangerous dog to have as a pet, they are fiercely loyal to their owner (moneyinc.com).
Samoyed
Even though we talked about Samoyeds earlier, it’s only fair to report these findings: someone who wants a Samoyed “should expect to pay from $8,000 to $10,000” to get one (moneyinc.com), and “These dogs are originally from Siberia and range between $6,500 and $12,000.” (tailandfur.com)
Tibetan Mastiff
Tail and Fur prices a Tibetan Mastiff from $5,000 to $9,000; Moneyinc.com puts the cost from $5,500 to $9,500, while The Dog Digest’s assessment is between $5,000 and $7,000.
More than $10,000
Löwchen
The Löwchen is a very rare breed, known in German as “little lion.” On average it will fetch between $5,000 and $8,000 (moneyinc.com). Tail and Fur says, “Their minimum selling price is around $7,000 . . .” They have even been sold for as much as $15,000. Fewer than 100 are registered each year.
The rarity of the Löwchen will fetch upwards to $10,000 dollars in some locations!
“Today, only a few hundred new Löwchens are registered every year in the world. Due to scarcity, price for these prized dogs have sky-rocketed and can fetch well over $10,000 USD per dog.” (thesmartcanine.com)
With respect to buying any of these dog breeds, it is vital to get health test results from your breeder, especially from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC).
